Warm and Well in North Yorkshire expects a huge rise in referrals this winter as the financial effects of the coronavirus take hold across the region.
Alarmingly, 72% of people referred have had a long-term health condition or a disability. One highest number for referrals to Warm & Well came from Hambleton District with 26% of referrals coming from the District. Richmondshire made up 18% of the referrals. The Harrogate District had the most referrals with 28% and Selby & District and Scarborough saw 17% and 19% of the referrals.
Warm & Well in North Yorkshire raises awareness of the impact of cold homes on health and wellbeing across the region. The organisation offers practical solutions to reduce fuel poverty, and supports people and communities to stay warm and well all year round. The organisation has specialist Energy Advisers who can help with issues such as support with energy debt, switching energy suppliers to save money, applications for emergency energy support, referrals to partner organisations such as Citizens Advice and applications for the warm home discount and green homes grant scheme.
Warm and Well in North Yorkshire Project Coordinator Julia Priestnall said “Our Specialist Advisers are working very hard to reach out to vulnerable people who are really struggling across the region. As another lockdown looms there is a perfect storm of fuel poverty gathering across what was already a Fuel poor area before the pandemic struck. In response to this we are working flat out to reach as many people as possible as the temperatures drop. We saved one gentleman £600 on his yearly energy bills recently, and have managed to help families in rural areas with properties that are ‘off the grid’ heat their homes when they have had no one else to turn to.
We have also been visiting rural areas in Hambleton and Richmondshire onboard Citizens Advice Mid North Yorkshire’s Rural Advice Bus as part of our #GearUpForWinter campaign, raising awareness about fuel poverty and helping people keep their homes warm. As part of the campaign we are regularly updating our Social Media on new government energy legislation and tips to keep warm during the Winter. We will also be taking part in #BESW20 or Best Energy Saving Winter 2020 with our partners throughout November.
If you are worried about a loved one or a neighbour that may be suffering from fuel poverty, you can refer them to us yourselves. We work closely with our fantastic partners which include Citizens Advice, North Yorkshire County Council, Age Uk, Yes Energy Solutions and many more to make sure all the client’s needs are met.
To refer yourself, a family member or friend visit the Warm and Well in North Yorkshire Website at https://www.warmandwell.org.uk/Referral-Form or call 01609 767 555.
